Course description

The aim of the course

The aim of the course is that the students should assimilate:

  • a substantial theoretical basis to understand key experimental techniques used in modern molecular biology research;
  • a practical experience in some of these methods, as well as skills to analyse and present experimental data both in oral and written form;
  • an ability to design relevant experiments and to practice critical evaluation of the data and the conclusions;
  • a theoretical and practical basis for further academic studies or professional practice in areas related to molecular biology.

The contents of the course

The theoretical part covers the molecular principles and mechanisms underlying the experimental approaches. The actual contents is updated every year to accommodate the most recent methods. Some examples of the methods dealt with are:

  • genetic engineering using various techniques;
  • sequence analysis, genomics and metagenomics;
  • gene expression analysis such as microarray techniques and real-time RT-PCR;
  • protein analysis, proteomics and recombinant protein production;
  • protein interaction and localization studies in vitro and in vivo.

The students will have opportunity to practice several of these methods during laboratory work, including site-directed mutagenesis, recombinant protein production and purification, real-time RT-PCR. The students will also train how to design relevant experiments to address a biological question, and how to critically evaluate experimental data. As a complement to the "wet labs", bioinformatic exercises will be performed during several computer labs.

Teaching and examination

The theoretical part consists of lectures and tutorials. Practical exercises are carried out in the laboratory and in the computer classes. An independent literature project to be presented in written and oral forms is assigned to each student.

The course is concluded by a written examination. At least 60 % of points is required for the grade "Pass", and 80 % for the grade "Pass with distinction".

Why take this course?

This course provides a good theoretical and practical basis for understanding molecular techniques, and is thus recommended for students who envision their future career in any area featuring molecular biology and/or biotechnology.
